The first caisson for the Outer Harbour’s breakwaters has been launched

The construction of the breakwaters for the future Outer Port in Gdynia has entered another important phase. In July 2026, the first large-scale reinforced concrete caisson was launched and then towed to its installation site. This operation marked the start of the main phase of the hydrotechnical works being carried out on the water.

The first caisson is almost 50 metres long, over 13 metres wide and nearly 12 metres high. Its construction required 1,465 m³ of concrete and 185.8 t of reinforcing steel, and the total weight of the structure is approximately 3,700 t. The caissons are being built in the harbour basin at the Bułgarskie and Puckie Quays, using a floating pontoon and a sliding formwork system.

We are particularly pleased because the WUPROHYD Design Office is the designer of the protective breakwaters for the Outer Harbour. We are responsible for preparing the multi-discipline design documentation, on the basis of which planning permission was granted in May 2026. For our firm, this marks a continuation of our work on the development of the Port of Gdynia, which began as early as the conceptual design stage for the Outer Harbour.

The project is being carried out under a ‘design and build’ contract. The main contractor for the works is a consortium comprising Budimex S.A. (the consortium leader), Roverpol sp. z o.o. and Rover Grupo. The contracting authorities are the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia and the Management Board of Morski Port Gdynia S.A. The contract for the project was signed on 2 October 2024.
